Any person in Canada over 12 years old can take the CFSC or CRFSC. Minors need a consent form from a parent or guardian. Visitors, permanent residents, and international students are all welcome — there is no citizenship or residency requirement.
If you’re new to this, take both the CFSC and CRFSC together. It’s cheaper ($450.40 combined vs. $495.60 separately), faster (both done within 30 days), and gives you access to both non-restricted and restricted firearms. There’s very little reason to take just one.
The CFSC (non-restricted) runs 8am to approximately 8pm — around 12 hours including breaks and exams, all in one day. The CRFSC (restricted) is approximately 7 hours. When taking both together, they’re done on two separate days within a 30-day window.
Yes. All prices are all-in: HST, examination fees, and the course textbook are included. CFSC only: $258.30. CRFSC only: $237.30. Both together within 30 days: $450.40. Active CAF members and veterans — ask about the discount when you register.
Bring pens or highlighters, water, snacks, and a full lunch — you’re there 8 to 12 hours. In winter, bring indoor shoes or slippers. Also bring your government-issued photo ID and the remaining course balance in cash (after your deposit).
About the same level as a driver’s education class. The material is designed for the general public — children as young as 12 can take it. Most people pass on their first try at SAMS Training. As long as you pay attention in class, you’ll be ready for the tests.
No. Textbooks, notes, and all electronic devices are prohibited during the written exam. The written portion has approximately 50 questions (35 true/false, 15 multiple choice). The practical exam takes 15–20 minutes per person and is done with an instructor the same day.
Expect a minimum of 2–3 months after submitting your application to the RCMP, and up to a year depending on your background check and province. Sam walks you through the exact application process on course day so you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Yes. SAMS Training continues to offer the CRFSC. As of October 22, 2022, you cannot purchase new handguns (the federal “freeze”), but you can still own, use, and borrow existing restricted firearms. The licence still has value — laws can change, and it’s cheaper to take both courses at once than to come back later.
Head to the Register page, pick a date from the course calendar, and follow the steps to pay your deposit through Acuity Scheduling. Sessions are capped at 12 students — weekends fill up fast. You can change your date at no cost up to 48 hours before the course.
